Waste? 02/19/2011
 
What defines waste, is it garbage or something you throw away?  Everywhere there is a growing movement to reduce waste, reduce your footprint and so forth.  Understandably this is not new, it is simply a growing concern, and we all know the reality is our resources are exhausting quickly.

The challenge I issue to myself is to reuse my garbage.  When repurposing others cast of materials into garden art as I cut and shape the leftovers are not thrown away.  Much like a gold miners tailings, my left overs go into a secondary bucket.  Gold hounds know that industrial mining operations don’t get all the gold out, and work their tailings.   Ironically I use other people’s garbage for garden art, and then go through my own tailing piles to use them for art.    What do you do with your waste?

Wintertime work;
This winter while most have been resting up indoors, losing their individuality to the television we at www.haoleware.com have been fast at work in the shop. Thanks to a wonderful donation from a retired berry farm or inventory of varied reclaimed materials has been rejuvenated. Old Raspberry picking carts, farm equipment, and irrigation pipe have given way to new solar light designs.
We also acquired our own forge last fall. Coupling the fire from the forge with our heaps of cast aside material we have been able to start crafting Decretive Plant Support Rods. We are getting ready for great summer show season!

Who are the Kings of recycling?
Today I was watching some bums at a Portland Max Train stop, and it occurred to me that the homeless might be the pioneers of recycling. One dweller of the streets reached into a trash can and pulled out a soda can. Minutes later a homeless girl went the same bin of trash and reclaimed some food leftovers. As time passed I noted at least four vagrants hit the same garbage bin. For them it was their superstore. Now I don’t recommend we all run out and rummage through a garbage can on the sidewalk, for sustenance.

It made me think about the homeless camps. Some of these people are incredibly resourceful and creative with cast aside objects. Perhaps necessity is the mother of innovation in this case, but recycling can take many forms.
